The Good, The Bad & The Kitsch.

* In which fools are my theme, let satire be my song.

It is painfully ridiculous how much I love Yinka Shonibare. The man is extremely talented, and incredibly smart. I have high opinions of his work, and regard his skill for re-imagining and/or critiquing history with great respect. In Diary of a Victorian Dandy, 21.00 Hours (1998), after Hogarth’s Rake’s Progress, and currently on view at the LACMA, Shonibare inserts himself into the picture, placing the black figure in a position of reverence and wealth, living a life of serious business and lavish frivolity, fawned over by his white servants and sycophantic acolytes. I must say, it was a flippin’ treat to get up close and personal to the above photograph, but wouldn’t it be nice to see the collection all together in one place at one time again? That’s not too much to ask, is it? Can we make this happen? Please?
