The Good, The Bad & The Kitsch.

* In which patience is a virtue…

These Lisa Nilsson anatomical cross-sections are remarkable. The pieces are made of tissue, and are quilled or filigreed, depending on how you refer to the technique. Writes Nilsson on her website,

Quilling was first practiced by Renaissance nuns and monks who made artistic use of the gilded edges of worn out bibles, and later by 18th century ladies who made artistic use of lots of free time.

This is definitely the most unconventional use of quilling I’ve ever seen.

    And there you are. This is really remarkable, and it’s always nicest when you get a history lesson on the technique.
